    Description

[Eleazar Huntington]. Declaration of Independence Engraved Broadside. One sheet, 18.5" x 22.5", circa 1822. "Engraved by E. Huntington" appears in small print along the lower margin. Huntington was a master calligrapher and engraver who intentionally retained the feel of the original Declaration while incorporating new styles of presentation. Thus, the famous signatures are faithfully reproduced without embellishment. Huntington's early engravings of the Declaration often hung in nineteenth-century schoolhouses, which frequently resulted in condition flaws. Repairs on this one exist on the verso to a weak fold (affecting some text) and a tear along the left margin. The left edge has been unevenly cut (no loss of text); the right edge exhibits some chipping. Toned paper with smoothed folds; text is clear and bold.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
