    Description

[Edwards Grant]. Haden Edwards. Printed document completed in manuscript, signed by Haden Edwards. N.p., [dated in manuscript September 4, 1826, but the printed year is 182_]. 1 p., 16mo. Certificate number 41. Provenance: Edwards family papers. "The interest and value of this document above and beyond its having been signed by Haden Edwards, lies in the fact that it is an apparently unknown imprint relating to Texas (needs more research). We feel that if Streeter had known of this item he would have listed it in his bibliography of Texas. Streeter mentions the colonization form for Austin colony and he also gives an entry for the other early impresario Leftwich (see Streeter 1087). Without further research it is difficult to ascertain where this grant form was printed. Streeter in his introduction has a sketch of printing in Texas and makes the comment "we know of no printing in Texas between July, 1823, and September, 1829." It seems unlikely that Edwards would have had the form printed in Mexico. Following the biographical chronology in Bancroft's Northern Mexico and Texas, it appears that Edwards was back in the United States during the summer of 1826. Perhaps he had these forms printed during that trip (Leftwich was back in the States in same time and his colonization form printed in Nashville)." - Dorothy Sloan. Courtesy of J. P. We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
