[Denver, Colorado]: James W. Denver Letter of Resignation. 1 1/4-page ALS, Indian Office, Washington, D.C., March 12, 1859, being a retained draft of a letter of resignation tendered to President James Buchanan, 8" x 10" bifolium stationery. It was written and signed by Denver, the former Territorial Governor of Kansas during the adoption of the Locomotion Constitution, for whom the city of Denver was named. He apologizes for the move, necessitated by four years of absence from his California residence and the neglect of business affairs. He expresses pride in his service in the Buchanan Administration "... which has had to encounter some of the most stormy and dangerous days of the Republic. Trusting that such storms may never again arise to mar the happiness of the country, and that the course of your administration may be so directed as to secure the blessings of peace and prosperity to the American people..." From the Estate of Malcolm S. Forbes.
