The colonial government offers "the sum of Sixty pounds for each scalp of any male Indian above The age of Twelve years"

[Colonial America]. Period Fair Copy of An Act to Encourage the Prosecution of the Indian Enemy and Rebels. One page, 12.25" x 15.75", Province of New Hampshire, September 1, 1722 [this is the date of the original document]. During the early eighteenth century, clashes between European settlers and the native Indian peoples was an all-too-common occurrence. This act, proposed by the colonial government of New Hampshire, offers payment of "the sum of Sixty pounds for each scalp of any male Indian above The age of Twelve years" and thirty pounds "for the scalps of all others and for prisoners Taken and Rendered to the Commander in Chief." "Company" and "Regular Detached" troops received considerably less. However, if a person were to produce a scalp claiming that it belongs to a dead Indian in an effort to "deceive & obtain the reward . . . The person or persons so offending shall Suffer three months Imprisonment and forfeit double the Sum." This is a period fair copy entirely accomplished in secretarial.

This copy has heavy wear with paper loss along the upper and main horizontal folds, and also at the edges of the folds and along the lower margin. All loss of paper has been repaired on the verso. Dampstaining is evident along the upper horizontal fold and less so along the lower right and left edges. Dampstaining has caused some blooming of the ink in places and fading of the text in others.

Richard Waldron (1694-1753), the son of noted Indian fighter Col. Richard Waldron, served the government of New Hampshire as a member of the Royal Council, secretary of the province, and speaker of the General Assembly. From the Donald P. Dow Collection.
