[Colonial America] Aaron Lopez, Prominent Jewish Merchant, Bill of Lading For Molasses Shipped to Boston, Undoubtedly Obtained in the West Indies in Trade for African Slaves. One page, on laid paper, partially printed and completed in manuscript, 9.5" x 7.25", dated December 30, 1756, signed "William Simonton" as master of the schooner "Ann", with folds, minor flaws, otherwise in very good condition. Aaron Lopez was a prominent merchant in Newport, Rhode Island. Ships owned by Lopez and other merchants transported slaves from Africa to the West Indies where they were sold and traded for molasses and sugar, key ingredients in the production of rum. The molasses, sugar and remaining money were shipped back to Rhode Island where rum was manufactured for trade within the colonies and for trade to Africa for more slaves. It is estimated that the city of Newport alone exchanged rum for over 106,000 slaves. The document reads, in part: "Shipped by the grace of God, in good Order, and well-conditioned, by Aaron Lopez in and upon the Schooner called the Ann where of is Master, under God, for this present Voyage, William Simonton and now at Anchor in the Harbor of Newport and by God's Grace bound for Boston To Say Six hhogsheads [sic] of Molasses for Account & Risk of the Shipper & Consigned to Mr. Henry Lloyd...".
