Description
[Austin's Colony]. Samuel May Williams Document Signed. Eight pages, 7.75" x 10", in Spanish, "Villa de Austin," December 1, 1828. Untranslated. Countersigned by Ira Ingram and Thomas M. Duke. Sewn at the left edge. Scattered foxing. Duke's signature appears above that of Ingram, but it is heavily faded. Ink bleed-through throughout. Samuel May Williams (1795-1858) arrived in Texas in 1822 and was hired by Stephen F. Austin as a translator and secretary. When he wrote this document, he was serving as secretary to the ayuntamiento of San Felipe de Austin. In 1835, he was named a revolutionary by the Mexican government (along with six others) for raising money to oppose President Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, but he escaped arrest by fleeing to the United States, where he spent the Texas Revolution raising money for the cause. He served in the Texas Congress as a representative of Galveston County in 1839.Ira Ingram (1788-1837) arrived in Texas in January 1826 as a member of Austin's Old Three Hundred where he settled in what is now Waller County. In the Convention of 1832 he served as a representative for the Mina District and for San Felipe during the Convention of 1833. He was the first alcalde of Matagorda in 1834 and authored the Goliad Declaration of Independence the following year. During the Texas Revolution, he first was involved in the capture of Goliad and later served in the Matagorda Volunteers. By April 1836 he was a major in the Texas Army ordered on a recruiting mission to the United States by General Sam Houston. After the war, he served as the first speaker of the House for the Republic of Texas.
Thomas M. Duke (1795-1867), a veteran of the War of 1812 and one of Austin's Old Three Hundred, served as the first alcalde of Austin's Colony and onetime mayor of the town of Matagorda.
