[Abraham Lincoln]: Manuscript of Senate Resolution of Support. The main item in this lot is a 2-page manuscript, unsigned but in the hand of Vermont Senator James Collamer, written on 8" x 10" bifolium stationery. It presents resolutions adopted at a meeting of Republican United States Senators which urge "a vigorous & successful prosecution of the war" and that the "Cabinet should be exclusively composed of Statesmen who are the cordial, resolute, unwavering supporters of the principles & purposes first above stated." It is endorsed on the third page by Iowa Senator James Grimes, certifying that it is "an original in the hand writing of the late Judge Collamer of Vt. of the paper presented to President Lincoln... referred to by Mr. Evarts in his speech in the impeachment trial." It is accompanied by a September 26, 1868 letter from Grimes to Evarts transmitting the document, along with the original mailing envelope addressed to Evarts with a free frank of Senator Grimes (loss in upper left corner not affecting any of the writing).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
