Description

[Abraham Lincoln]. Letter to Lincoln from Illinois Governor Richard Yates. One page, 8" x 10", Springfield, September 27, 1861. In full:

"Sir, I enclose to you a petition for the appointment of Capt TG Pitcher of the Regular Army - a Brigadier General of Volunteers. Capt Pitcher is a gentleman of fine talents and superior attainments. I deem that his appointment would be a highly judicious one and would respectfully request your excellency to give a favorable consideration to the petition. I have the honor to be your excellency's obdt servt - Rich. Yates / Governor ".

Thomas Gamble Pitcher (1824-1895) served in the Mexican War before going on to serve during the Civil War. He was captured at Harpers Ferry by General Jackson's forces, but was exchanged soon after. At the Battle of Cedar Mountain, August 9, 1862, he was seriously wounded and saw no further field action. Instead, from mid-1863 to the end of the war, he served as state provost marshal in Vermont and then Indiana. After the war, he was appointed Superintendent of the United States Military Academy, a position he held from 1866-1870.
