[Abraham Lincoln]: Cooper Union Speech Quote Signed by Schuyler Colfax. 5.5" x 3.5" manuscript, removed from an album (loss to lower right corner affecting date), containing the conclusion to Lincoln's Cooper Union Address of February 28, 1860, completed in the hand of Grant's first Vice President and Speaker of the House during Lincoln's Administration, Schuyler Colfax. The Indiana politician was hoping for a post in the Lincoln Cabinet, but lost out to Caleb Smith. Lincoln disliked Colfax, derisively calling him "Smiley", but sought to paper-over the rebuff by saying Colfax was a young politician with his whole career ahead of him while, with Smith, it was "now or never". After leaving the Vice Presidency in 1873, Colfax entered the lecture circuit... his favorite topic being the life of Abraham Lincoln.
