[Abraham Lincoln]: Cabinet Member LSs and ALSs [10]. Very nice collection of Letters Signed and Autograph Letters Signed by Vice President Hamlin and numerous members of the Lincoln Cabinet. These are all 1-page letters with the signature on the front sheet. The highlight of the group is a letter from Edward Bates to Horace Greeley, dated March 1, 1860. Bates was a Republican presidential hopeful and Greeley's choice for the nomination. Here, however, Bates complains about his difficulty in obtaining copies of the "Tribune". He continues: "Accept my thanks sir for the liberal & generous course which your great paper (& you personally) towards me. You will see in the papers with what zeal & unanimity the Mo. opposition State Convention has moved in the direction of your own [illegible]."

Other letters include: an 1867 Montgomery Blair ALS recommending Capt. McMichael for a job, an 1867 Simon Cameron ALS recommending someone for a clerkship, an 1861 Salmon Chase ALS as Treasurer arranging for a meeting of a friend with Adjutant General Thomas, an 1869 William Fassenden ALS constituting a letter of introduction, an 1868 Hannibal Hamlin ALS recommending someone for a job in the Patent Office, an 1839 William Seward ALS to Asbury Dickins acknowledging the receipt of documents, an 1862 Caleb Smith Letter Signed regarding the availability of a government-issued Blue Book, an 1862 Edwin Stanton ALS to Adjutant General Thomas regarding a nomination form for Dr. Meredith Clymer as Brigade Surgeon and an 1862 Gideon Welles Letter Signed to Commander Febiger of the U. S. S. Steamer Kanawha ordering him to join Admiral Farragut as part of the Western Gulf Blockading Squadron.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
