    Description

St. Alban's Raid Autographs. On October 19, 1864, Confederate raiders led by Bennett H. Young entered St. Alban's, Vermont intent on robbing and pillaging. Offered here are three checks signed by direct participants in the event. The raiders were unsuccessful in their quest, but escaped to Canada where they were later captured.

C.N. Bishop Signed Check (8.5" x 2.75") drawn on the First National Bank, dated March 26, 1870, in the amount of $106.70. Bishop has signed on the verso, "Remit / CN Bishop." With multiple folds and cut cancellation at center. Bishop was a bank teller at the St. Albans bank when Young's raiders entered the bank intent to rob it. Bishop was held at gunpoint, ordered into the back room and was administered the Confederate oath.

Albert Sowles Signed Check (8.5" x 2.5") drawn on the Merchants National Bank of Burlington, dated November 21, 1877, made out to Sowles in the amount of $1000.00. Signed on verso by Sowles, beneath his stamped signature. Sowles was held captive during the bank heist, but was able to convince the raiders that the bags filled with gold were filled with cents. The raiders left the bank empty handed. Three pinholes on left side of check, otherwise near fine.

John L. Barstow Signed Check (7.75" x 3") drawn on the Merchants National Bank of Burlington, dated March 4, 1872. Engrossed and signed by Barstow. Barstow served in the state legislature, which was in session on the day of the raid. He served on the militia that went in to Canada to capture the raiders. Cut cancellation at center well away from signature and with no loss of paper.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
