Sir Henry Clinton Document Signed. One partly-printed page, 7.75" x 11.25", New York, August 26, 1780. With this document, Henry Clinton, "General and Commander in Chief of all His Majesty's Forces, within the Colonies laying on the Atlantic Ocean, from Nova-Scotia to West-Florida, inclusive," directs Deputy Paymaster General David Thomas to pay "Captain George Hewett, Paymaster to a Detachment from His Majesty's Seventieth Regiment of Foot, where of Major General William Tryon is Colonel . . . the Sum of Two Hundred and Eight Pounds, Eighteen Shilling and Five pence, Sterling, Being Subsistence for the two Flank Companies of said Regiment."

In mid 1779, British General Clinton began assembling a large contingent with which he planned to invade South Carolina. Clinton took personal command of this campaign and his task force of 14,000 men sailed south from New York at the end of the year. By early 1780, Clinton had brought Charleston under siege and by May had forced the surrender of the city in a serious defeat for the rebel cause. This handsome document was signed shortly after Clinton's stunning victory at Charleston. Document is lightly age toned, with a few professional repairs (fold strengthening and edge repair). Large bold signature.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
