Governor of the Spanish Colony of Texas

Simon de Herrera Manuscript Document Signed Twice as Governor of Nuevo de Leon. 10 pages on sealed paper, 8.25" x 12.25", with receipt attached, 11.25" x 7"; Nuevo Leon, April 1798. A legal petition filed by a widow for the rights to land and water rights given to her by her now deceased husband. Signed "Simon de Herrera" adding his rubric on page 8, at the end of his judgment (which begins on the preceding page). Herrera adds a three-line postscript and signs a second time.

This is the first Herrera signed document we have handled, and could not locate any auction or dealer sales records for another. Herrera was a lifelong politician and military officer. He was made commander in charge of the Louisiana frontier, and was ordered to patrol the area between Sabine and Arroyo Hondo against possible aggression by American forces led by James Wilkinson. After establishing the Neutral Ground agreement in 1806, he dedicated his time to improving the defenses of Texas. He served briefly as the Governor of Texas in 1811. A rare document signed by an important official whose actions greatly affected the course of Texas, Mexico, and United States history.

Condition: Pages are hand-sewn with blue thread, with small chips of paper resulting. Evenly toned, light foxing and dampstaining, with bold ink.
