Simon Cameron Autograph Letter Signed as secretary of war. Two page, front and verso, 6.5" x 7.75", November 30, 1861, Washington, D.C. More Information:

Cameron also explains that Lincoln filled the vacancy created by the promotion with a man chosen by the president himself. Cameron ends the letter by writing, "Now let me say, my good friend Warren, that it is not my practice to change old friends for new. Especially would it be no easy matter to trade you off for a new acquaintance. I have ever valued your friendship, and the only complaint I have to make is, that you are a little too suspicious of your friends."

Colonel Fitz Henry Warren, who had helped to raise the 1st Regiment Iowa Volunteer Cavalry, was promoted to brigadier general with a command in the army in Missouri within a year of the writing of this letter. Before the close of the war, he was brevetted major general.

Senator Simon Cameron of Pennsylvania sought the 1860 Republican Party nomination for president, but threw his support to Abraham Lincoln after the first ballot. As part of a political bargain, Lincoln, named Cameron as secretary of war. However, because of allegations of corruption, Cameron was forced to resign early in 1862. He is best remembered for his statement, "An honest politician is one who, when he is bought, will stay bought."
