    Description

Sigmund Freud Autograph Postcard Signed "freud." 5.5" x 3.5", in German (not translated), Vienna, n. d. [the date is obscured and illegible]. Addressed in his hand, Freud writes to Dr. Alfred Francis Pribram (1859-1942), an Austrian-born Jewish historian and professor, who is at Harvard University in the United States at the time of the writing. Smoke and water damage at the right edge have rendered the date and a portion of the text illegible. The damage, coupled with Freud's penmanship and his use of language, make the text difficult to discern. The postcard is tipped onto a card to an overall size of 6.5" x 4.25".

Pribram was a friend of Freud and a professor of medieval and modern history at the University of Vienna and a member of the Viennese Academy of Sciences until 1938, when "non-Aryans" were forced to remove themselves from the group's ranks. Following the annexation of Austria by the Nazis in 1938, Pribram immigrated to England.
