Sheriff A. A. "Gus" Bobbitt: A Surety Bond Posted for an Alleged Perpetrator of Highway Robbery in Indian Territory. Bobbitt is best remembered as the victims of murder-for-hire by the notorious killer J. B. Miller. By 1909 he had retired from the law and ran a ranch near Ada, Oklahoma. He had been feuding with several neighboring ranches, who hired Miller to assassinate Bobbitt. Miller ambushed the former sheriff, blasting him with both barrels of a shotgun in the presence of Mrs. Bobbitt. The killer managed to get away and surfaced two months later in Fort Worth, Texas, but he was apprehended and extradited to Ada, where he was promptly lynched by an enraged mob, along with the three cattlemen who had hired him.

Offered here is a 1903 court document boldly signed by Bobbitt. 8.25" x 13.5", and in excellent condition.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
