    Description

Sheridan & Custer: An Outstanding Content Letter to Custer from his Longtime Patron. On June 4, 1869, Sheridan writes to Custer at Fort Hays. He refers to a letter received from Custer and responds, "I have been so much disgusted with the management of Indian Affairs as to become perfectly indifferent to the whole subject. There does not seem to be any common sense used by the authorities is reference to Indians, and no chance to obtain information from anyone who could give valuable information on the subject...."

A real impediment to the army's forming intelligent policies regarding the Plains Indians was the terrible corruption among Indian agents and others whose reports were often falsified or distorted to their own advantage. One of the reasons for Custer's defeat at Little Big Horn may have been his reliance on faulty intelligence supplied by the agencies. Because the agencies received government money and goods based on the Indian population of their reservations, agents may have seriously under-reported the number of braves who had gone "off the reservation" in 1876, leading Custer to, in turn, underestimate the number of potential combatants he might face.

Most of the balance of the letter concerns the difficulty of securing "a more comfortable place" for Custer due to changes in command, but he tells him to make application to him personally "and I will send it through and see what can be done...." He closes with "kind regards to Mrs. Custer." An outstanding letter from the army's top general and Custer's longtime patron. 4 pp. on a single sheet, accompanied by the original envelope addressed to Custer as well as a scarce CDV photograph autographed by Sheridan.
