    Description

Sculptor Hiram Powers Autograph Letter Signed. American Sculptor. Autograph Letter Signed, one page 4to with integral address leaf, Florence, Feb. 7, 1840, to Senator George McDuffie (S. C.). A lengthy letter about shipping and payment for his bust of McDuffie, stating that he has "...need of all the money I can obtain, so great are the expenses of my studio and family here..." In a postscript, he asks to be remembered incase any public art project should arise in South Carolina. Powers had been in Italy for less than three years; he sailed to Europe with many plaster models for portrait busts to be carved in marble, and McDuffie's must have been one of them. Hiram Powers became a great success, and his home in Florence was a meeting place for important Americans abroad. Mounted by the top edge of the address leaf. Fine condition. With a portrait engraving. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
