Samuel May Williams Autograph Document Signed on Behalf of Stephen Austin. One page, 8" x 4.25"; San Felipe de Austin; December 10, 1829. A receipt issued to George B. McKinstry for $75.00 in fees "for which note s[ai]d Mckinstry has credit in my books as per entry of this day... Stephen F. Austin by Samuel M. Williams." With a docket on the verso in an unknown hand. Williams worked for Austin, writing deeds and keeping all records for the colony.

George B. McKinstry (1801-1837) arrived in Texas on April 20, 1829 and became a Mexican citizen less than a month later on May 19. Five days after the date of this receipt, he purchased two building lots and one garden lot in San Felipe de Austin. McKinstry was an early participant in opposition to Mexican rule. He was involved in the Anahuac Disturbances, going so far as to raise subscriptions for the purchase of powder and arms. He would later participate in the Battle of Velasco, and was promoted to lieutenant and commanded the capture of the fort at Velasco. McKinney represented the Victoria District at the Convention of 1832; he would, of course, be in favor of declaring independence from Mexico.

Condition: Flattened folds, with bits of paper loss along top and a rough edge along the right. Some showthrough from docket on verso, as well as cello tape along top.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
