    Description

Samuel Houston Autograph Letter Signed "Sam Houston," 2pp., 8" x 9.75", front and verso. Browns Hotel [Washington, D.C.], March 18, 1834. "To/Gov Lewis Cass/Secy of War." In full, "I have the honor of presenting to you, as one of the friends of Colonel James C. Pickett one of the officers under Genl Cass during the last war, his name. Since which time he has maintained in his own State, as well, as in foreign Courts, the high reputation which he acquired during the war. It will be desirable for Col. P. to obtain the sutlery to one half the companies of the Dragoon Corps - the profits of which it is believed, will fully authorize an equal Division of the benefits. To say any thing further in behalf of a Gentleman as well known as Col. Pickett and his claims, wou'd be superfluous. I have the honor to be with great respect. Your obt. Servant." Col. James C. Pickett (1793-1872) was an officer of U.S. Artillery in the War of 1812. Lewis Cass, former Governor of Michigan Territory (1813-1831) and Jackson's Secretary of War (1831-1836), was a Brigadier General in the War of 1812. Pickett had served as Virginia Secretary of State (1825-1828) and was appointed by Pres. Jackson as Secretary of the U. S. Legation to Colombia (1829-1833). After Houston wrote this letter, Col. Pickett was Commissioner of the U. S. Patent Office (1835), fourth auditor of the U.S. Treasury (1835-1838), and, appointed by Pres. Van Buren, Charge d'Affaires to the Peru-Bolivian Confederation from 1838-1845. Glassine repairs on verso. Fine condition.
