    Samuel F. Smith Autograph Manuscript "America" Signed "S.F. Smith." One page, 9" x 7" (sight). Originally published in 1832, Smith (1808-1895), a Baptist minister and author, wrote this manuscript on January 28, 1895. Headed "America," this patriotic song, also known as "My Country, 'Tis of Thee," consists of four verses of seven lines each accomplished entirely in Smith's hand.

    The song, set to the tune of the British national anthem, "God Save the Queen (or King)," was first performed on July 4, 1831, at a children's celebration in Boston and, before the adoption of "The Star-Spangled Banner," served as one of the unofficial national anthems of the United States. The song is still regularly performed today.

    Condition: The document, which is mounted to a backing board, shows one smoothed vertical fold and spots of scattered toning. It is matted to an overall size of 16" x 14.25".

    More Information:

    "My country, 'tis of thee,

    Sweet land of liberty,

    Of thee I sing;

    Land where my fathers died,

    Land of the pilgrims' pride,

    From ev'ry mountainside

    Let freedom ring.

    "My native country, thee,

    Land of the noble free,

    Thy name I love;

    I love thy rocks and rills,

    Thy woods and templed hills;

    My heart with rapture thrills

    Like that above.

    "Let music swell the breeze,

    And ring from all the trees

    Sweet freedom's song;

    Let mortal tongues awake,

    Let all that breathe partake,

    Let rocks their silence break,

    The sound prolong.

    "Our fathers' God, to Thee,

    Author of liberty,

    To Thee we sing;

    Long may our land be bright,

    With freedom's holy light,

    Protect us by Thy might,

    Great God our King."

    We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
