Description

Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) Autograph Note Signed "SL Clemens." One page, 4.75" x 4", np, nd. This note was written to a Mr. Hall, and it reads, "I steal a line here to shake hands with you & add the hope that both of the families may meet again at no distant day." Samuel Clemens was born in Florida, Missouri; after he tried several failed careers including printer and miner he settled on being an editor for the Virginia City Territorial Enterprise in Nevada. Later he began writing, and some of his early tales include The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County and Innocents Abroad. His best known works are The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and, of course, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Ernest Hemingway once said, "All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn…all American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since." This lot comes nicely framed along with a black and white, 7" x 8.5", photograph of Clemens and a small plaque bearing his name and a brief biography. The entire piece measures 25" x 22".

The note is in very fine condition; usual folds are present; note has been clipped from a larger document; crease lines present in upper right corner. Accompanied by LOA from PSA/DNA.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
