    Description

Sam Houston Land Grant Signed as governor of Texas. One partially-printed page, 14.75" x 12.5", Austin, August 14, 1860, No. 524 Vol. 425, granting the heirs of Jacob Weber land "In Concho County on the South Side of the Coucho River about 12 miles...from the mouth of Said River..." The document is countersigned by General Land Office Commissioner Francis M. White. Houston's large signature is boldly written in the lower right corner.

Condition: Uneven toning, darker at edges, with flattened folds, and small stray staining. With showthrough from docketing on verso. Two notes written in pencil in an unknown hand at top and bottom margin. Otherwise very fine.

    More Information:

Sam Houston had been elected governor of Texas in 1859, becoming the only person to date to serve as governor of two states (he was governor of Tennessee from 1827 to 1829) and the only to be a former head of state to a foreign nation. After Lincoln's election to the U. S. presidency in 1860, the Texas Secession Convention convened and Houston fervently opposed to secession. When Texas seceded in February 1861, Houston was forced from office after refusing to take the oath of allegiance to the Confederacy.
