Sam Houston Land Grant Signed as governor of Texas. One partially-printed page, 14.75" x 11.5" (sight), Austin, March 6, 1860, granting to "William R.C. Hays . . . Twelve hundred and Eighty acres of Land . . . In Atascosa County on the Waters of Clear creek." Docketed on the verso. Houston's signature lacks the familiar paraph, but is very bold. Matted with an engraved portrait of Houston to an overall size of 26" x 17.75".

The renowned soldier and statesman, Sam Houston (1793-1863), is the only American to have served as the governor of two states: Tennessee and Texas. In addition, he is the only American governor to be the head of state of a foreign nation, serving two non-consecutive terms as president of the Republic of Texas. Houston was also the only governor of a Southern state to oppose secession. Just over one year after signing this grant, on March 16, 1861, Houston was ousted from office for refusing to take an oath of loyalty to the Confederacy.

Condition: All of the text in this document, including the signature of Houston, shows ink blooming. Ink bleed-through from the verso. Folds.
