    Description

Sam Houston Land Grant Signed as governor of Tennessee. One partially-printed page, 12" x 15" (sight), Nashville, June 13, 1828, granting to "David Pinkerton a certain Tract or Parcel of Land, containing Fifty acres" in Davidson County at the cost of twelve and a half cents per acre. Seal of the State of Tennessee at upper left corner. Houston's bold signature shows some light ink smudging. Countersigned by David Graham as secretary of state. Folds show some separation at the edges and minor paper loss at the intersections. Scattered spots of foxing. Small .5" tear at the upper right edge. Matted with a photograph of an elderly Houston and framed to an overall size of 26.25" x 23.25".

Prior to his arrival in Texas, Houston served one term as governor of Tennessee. Having decided to run for reelection in 1829, he reversed his decision after his eleven week marriage to nineteen year old Eliza Allen suddenly ended. He is currently the only man in U.S. history who has served as governor of two states (he served as governor of Texas from December 1859 until March 1861).
