Sam Houston Land Grant Signed. One page, 14.75" x 12.75", April 28, 1860, Austin, Texas. This official Texas document grants to "John E. Palmer . . . Three Hundred and twenty acres . . . in Anderson County on the waters of Still's Creek of the Neches River about 7 miles . . . from Palestine." Contains two blind embossed seals: a state seal at the bottom center and a General Land Office seal at the bottom left. Countersigned by General Land Office Commissioner Francis M. White, who was appointed to the post in 1857 and served until 1862.

Houston was elected governor of Texas in 1859 and has the distinction of being the only person to serve as the governor of two different states (he was elected governor of Tennessee in 1827). Regardless of Governor Houston's opposition to secession, Texas seceded on March 2, 1861, and Houston, refusing to support the move, was evicted from office two weeks later. This document, signed less than a year before that eviction, contains a bold "Sam Houston" signature with blossoming ink. Docketing on verso. Contains light handwritten notations at the top and bottom, along with folds and foxing; near fine.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
