    Description

Sam Houston Autograph Letter to William Worth, Signed Twice. 3pp., 9.75" x 7.75", Washington, D.C., December 17, 1826. The letter is in fair condition with a small hole and a chipped corner on pages one and two; and two small holes, corner chipping, and a large piece out of the left edge on page three.

Sam Houston was a member of the House of Representatives when he wrote this letter to Major William J. Worth (1794-1849) at West Point. Later, during the Mexican War, Worth served under General Zachary Taylor and General Winfield Scott, who is mentioned on page three of the letter. In 1847, when U.S. forces marched into Mexico City, Worth climbed onto the roof of the National Palace to replace the Mexican flag with Old Glory. The city of Fort Worth was named in his honor. The letter, including some fine personal content between friends, is signed 'Thine Truly / Sam Houston'. The verso of page three includes Worth's mailing address, a Washington postmark, Houston's official seal in red wax, and a second signature 'From Sam Houston'.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
