Sam Houston Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages with blank integral, 8" x 10". No date, but circa early 1837. A letter addressed to Major John W. Moody, 1st auditor of the army of the Republic, concerning pay due to a soldier. The letter reads:

"Mr. Northup is entitled to pay as a first Lieutenant with the addition of ten Dollars per month and forage for one horse. He was only Commissary to a Battalion, and not even a Regiment. As above he will be allowed two months pay previous to his landing here about the 1st of November/36 - up to the time that the army was reorganized. He is only entitled to one horse, and one servant. He is only entitled to three Rations per diem, and as he drew one, but two are due, and his servant drew his, of course, from the public supplies."

Although the letter is not dated, it was likely written in early 1837. Sam Houston was elected first president of the Republic of Texas in October of 1836 and immediately set about reorganizing the army. In December of 1836, as referenced in his letter, Houston increased the regular army and one major general and two brigadier generals to its command. The Revolution had largely been fought by volunteers, and the Republic now sought to professionalize its armed forces. Houston added administrative offices for several departments to ensure more professional standards, including John W. Moody, who served as 1st auditor of the army, and was tasked with establishing protocols for salaries and all matters of equipage for officers and soldiers. Property from the Estate of Kenneth S. "Bud" Adams, Jr.

Light toning at edges, else very good.
