    Houston orders payments of printings ordered during Lamar's administration

    Sam Houston Autograph Endorsement Signed as President at bottom of an invoice from the Houstonian Press billed to the "Republic of Texas / Executive Department". Two pages, 7.75" x 9.6" (sight). Circa 1843. Houston writes, in full: "To Mr. Raymond / actg Treasurer / You will please to the bearer Jno. N.O. Smith esqr. The sum of one hundred and thirty six dollars in Exchequers, and of the Executive contingent fund for 1843. Your obt servt. [signed] Sam Houston.

    Above Houston's endorsement is a listed 13 line items for various proclamations, commissions, and hand bills printed during the months of March through July 1841, during Mirabeau Lamar's administration, including dates that would coincide with Lamar's failed Santa Fe Expedition. On the verso is a second ordering the payment, and an acknowledgement from Smith that he has received payment dated June 19, 1843. A filing docket recording payment and allocation.

    Condition: Age toning, with some showthrough from writing on verso. Matted and framed to an overall size of 16.75" x 18.75"
