Sam Houston Autograph Document Signed. One page, 7.5" x 2.75" (sight), Maryville [Tennessee], August 17, 1814, certifying that "...John Martin from & after the passing Camp Lookout drew no pay for forage for his horses untill nor passing Kingston post." Following his signature, Houston writes the word "master." Chipped and toned edges. The signature shows a faint mirror on the left side. Houston shows the usual boldness in the signature, which lacks the paraph ubiquitous in later exemplars. Matted and framed to an overall size of 15" x 10.5".

At the time, Sam Houston was at home recuperating from wounds received five months earlier at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend on the Tallapoosa River in Alabama. Houston was wounded early in the battle when he took a Creek arrow to the groin. He had the wound bandaged up and promptly rejoined the fighting, but was wounded twice more following Andrew Jackson's call for volunteers to assault the Indians, who were protected by their earthworks. In the subsequent charge, Houston received gunshot wounds to the arm and shoulder. His heroism won the attention of Jackson and the two became close friends.
