Salmon P. Chase Letter Signed as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court "S. P. Chase". One page, 5" x 8", Washington, May 1, 1878. Signed just days before his retirement from the Supreme Court, Chase writes of his esteem for Mrs. Mary H. Schoolcraft and her late husband Henry Schoolcraft. The letter has the usual fold creases, with some toning and small stains; otherwise it is a bright, legible example in very good condition.

    More Information:

The letter reads, in part: "It gives me great pleasure to be able to concur with Professor Henry and Mr. Corcoran in their estimate of Mrs. Mary H. Schoolcraft and her benevolent undertaking. I had the pleasure of knowing Professor Schoolcraft, when, as a young man, he was engaged with Gen. Cass in his exploring tour to the upper lakes. I was then a boy of twelve. His reputation was already great and has since become worldwide. His excellent widow has all his energy and benevolence of character." Professor Schoolcraft is probably best known for his discovery of the headwaters of the Mississippi River in 1832. Mary, his second wife, wrote a novel entitled The Black Gauntlet: A Tale of Plantation Life in South Carolina in 1860 on the eve of the Civil War. The novel was a defense of slavery using biblical quotes to bolster her strong pro-slavery sentiments. Cursory research has failed to discover the exact nature of Mrs. Schoolcraft's "benevolent undertaking".

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
