    Salmon Chase Autograph Letter Signed as Secretary of the Treasury "S. P. Chase". One page, 5.25" x 6.5", on Treasury Department letterhead, [Washington], July 8, 1861; to a colleague regarding the matter of appointees. With the usual old fold creases and traces of old mounting remnants on the verso, otherwise it is an exceptionally bright letter in fine condition.

    He writes in part: "It gives me great pleasure to say to you that I can appoint one of the gentlemen recommended you &, if he later does not desire to recommend any body or will adopt your other friend. I shall be glad to appoint them both. Be apprised that it gives me much satisfaction to be able to write you this note than you can derive receiving it. Truly yours, S. P. Chase".
