Sabine Baring Gould Autograph Manuscript Signed "S. Baring Gould". One page, 8" x 12.75", holographic folio, with title at head, of Gould's famous hymn Onward, Christian Soldiers. Comprising the full hymn of 5 verses, 8 lines each. The first full verse as follows:

    Onward, Christian soldiers
    Marching as to war,
    With the Cross of Jesus
    Going on before.
    Christ, the Royal Master
    Leads against the foe,
    Forward into battle
    See, His banners go.

This hymn, written in 1865, remains popular today. The music for the hymn was later composed by Arthur Sullivan in 1871. The Salvation Army has since adopted Onward, Christian Soldiers as its processional hymn. Sabine Baring Gould (1834-1924) was a popular clergyman, author and poet. Besides the lives of the saints he wrote largely on theological and antiquarian subjects and achieved great success as a novelist.

Condition: Light toning with flattened folds. Slight foxing at top and bottom margins.

    Onward, Christian soldiers

    Marching as to war,

    With the Cross of Jesus

    Going on before.

    Christ, the Royal Master

    Leads against the foe,

    Forward into battle

    See, His banners go.

    At the sign of triumph

    Satan's legions flee:

    On then, Christian soldiers,

    On to victory.

    Hell's foundations quiver

    At the shout of praise;

    Brothers, lift your voices,

    Loud your anthems raise!

    Like a mighty army

    Moves the Church of God,

    Brothers, we are treading

    Where the saints have trod.

    We are not divided

    All one body we

    One in hope, in doctrine

    One in charity.

    Crowns & thrones may perish

    Kingdoms rise and wane,

    But the Church of Jesus

    Constant will remain.

    Gates of hell can never

    'gainst that Church prevail

    We have Christ's own promise

    And that cannot fail.

    Onward, then, ye people

    Join our happy throng,

    Blend with ours your voices

    In the triumph song:

    Glory, laud and honor,

    Unto Christ the King,

    This through countless ages

    Men and angels sing.
