"We were raised to be intolerant of one thing - - intolerance"

Ronald Reagan Typed Letter Signed. One page on White House letterhead, 7" x 10.5", July 17, 1984. Addressed to Norman Cousins, Reagan discusses his religious upbringing and happily accepts Cousins' offer of a copy of In God We Trust. Reagan writes: "Indeed, I can recall as a boy when there was a very pronounced prejudice against Catholicism. My father was Catholic, my mother was Protestant, and my brother and I were raised in our mother's church. We were raised to be intolerant of one thing - - intolerance. It's hard to believe now, but some of our boyhood battles were in response to charges by other kids that the basement of the local Catholic Church was filled with guns for the day when the Pope gave the order to take over the country. Sounds silly, doesn't it? Yet ours was a typical Midwest small town." Boldly signed in black ink, with accompanying transmittal envelope. Ex. Norman Cousins Estate.

Condition: Toned along bottom margin, with usual mail folds, else good condition.
