    Description

    Rodgers & Hammerstein Correspondence with Carbon Typescript of "Pipe Dream." A group of approximately twelve letters, dating from 1954 to 1956, relating to the publication of Steinbeck's short story Sweet Thursday, its adaptation into the musical Pipe Dream, and Steinbeck's experiences while in Paris. The letters included are as follows:

    Unknown Author Typed Letter Signed "Barbra." Three pages, 7.25" x 10.5", New York; June 15, 1954. Addressed to the Steinbecks.

    Unknown Author Autograph Letter Signed "Marvin." One page, 7" x 10.5", no place; December 4, 1955. Addressed to the Elaine Steinbeck.

    Unknown Author Typed Letter. One page, 8.5" x 11", no place; June 25, 1956. Addressed to Morris Jacobs.

    Unknown Author Typed Letter Signed "Fea [illegible]." One page, 7.25" x 10.5", no place; December 6, 1955. Addressed to John Steinbeck.

    Accompanying the letters is the carbon typescript of Pipe Dream, 100 pages, with music by Rodgers and Book & Lyrics by Hammerstein. The musical unfortunately was not a success, despite being nominated for numerous Tony Awards.

    Condition: Varying degrees of creasing, wear and soiling to the letters. Minor chipping at the edges. There are small pencil notations at the top right corner on all pages. The typescript is in very good condition.
