Robert Morris Autograph Letter Signed. Three pages of a bifolium, 15.25" x 9.5", Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; April 12, 1798. Addressed to General Philemon Dickinson from the Philadelphia's debtor's prison. The letter concerns the sale of his New Jersey Farms to settle his debts. It reads in part: "...therefore I make you an offer of the Jersey Farms those which I purchased of Miss Cadwallader at the same price & upon the same terms...We shall have to agree upon the value to be allowed you for Nicholson's Debt by Bond...Should you decline the offer let me know, as I have no doubt of its being gladly accepted by some other of my Creditors." Signed, "Robt Morris." Matted, framed and double-glazed to an overall size of 21" x 15.5". With COA from Heritage Collector's Society listing the current owner as I. A. Morris.

Robert Morris (1734-1806), widely known as the "financier of the American Revolution," was one of the Founding Fathers and signers of the Declaration of Independence. He served as the Superintendent of Finance from 1781 to 1784 and is considered, along with Alexander Hamilton, to be a founder of the United States financial system. It was Morris who recommended Hamilton for the post of Secretary of the Treasury after declining it himself. After the Revolutionary War he became deeply entrenched in land speculation and formed a partnership with John Nicholson to create the North American Land Company. It proved a spectacular disaster for both men. Morris was imprisoned in debtors' prison for three years and was only released in 1801 after the passage of the Bankruptcy Act of 1800. Nicholson himself died there in 1800.

Condition: Very light soiling with some areas of toning from offsetting of wax seal remnants.
