    Description

    Robert Fulton Erie Canal Commission Document Signed with Related Document. Two pages of a bifolium, 10" x 15.5", New York; October 8, 1811. A document addressed to the Governor of Georgia [David Brydie Mitchell], stating the formation of what would later be called the Erie Canal Commission whose purpose was "to co-operate and aid in opening a communication, by means of a Canal Navigation, between the great Lakes and Hudson's River..." and soliciting aid for the commission. It reads in part: "The State of New York is not ignorant of the special benefit which she might secure to herself by holding in her own hands the best communication between the Territory around the Lakes and the Atlantic Ocean, neither is she so devoid of enterprise or resource as not to open that abundant source of influence and revenue...There are two modes, Sir, by which your state may contribute to this great work; by pecuniary appropriations, and by the influence in the councils of the union to which is she is entitled." Signed, "Robert Fulton." Countersigned by the rest of the commission: Gouverneur Morris, Dewitt Clinton, Simeon De Witt, William North, Thomas Eddy, and Robert R. Livingston. Accompanied by:

    State of New York Act for the Improvement of the Internal Navigation of the State. One page, 8" x 10", Albany; July 10, 1811. A document appointing the commissioners and allowing them to solicit aid from other state legislatures and territories as well as employing engineers and surveyors "to fulfil the duties imposed on them by this act."

    Condition: Small dampstain along vertical fold with minor areas of loss. Lightly soiled with some offsetting and minute foxing. Toning from signatures visible on recto. Pencil notation. Fold with some loss crosses Eddy's signature. Act with some edgewear, including chipping, on right edge.
