    Description

    Robert E. Lee Signed Fort Hamilton Receipt. One page, 8" x 10", Fort Hamilton, New York; May 30, 1846. A signed supply receipt, marked "Voucher No. 4", made out to Townsend & Brooks for the sum of $6.00. An entry for May 10, 1846 records, "For N.Y. daily Express from 10 Mar 1846 to 10 May 1847...Purchase of Materials." Signed by Lee, "RE Lee Capt Eng".

    Lee, who graduated from West Point in 1829 without any demerits, was promoted to Captain of Engineers in 1838. Two years later, he was sent to Fort Hamilton (located in Brooklyn, New York) where he enhanced the defenses of the New York harbor until the outbreak of the Mexican War in 1846.

    Condition: Flattened folds, with some small separations at the margins resulting from wear. There is light toning and foxing throughout, else good.
