    Robert E. Lee Signed Carte de Visite with Fair Copy of Lee's Appomattox Letter of Surrender to Grant. 2.25" x 4", no place; circa 1870. Signed "RE Lee" at the lower half. Framed with a fair copy of Lee's letter to General Grant. One page, 7.75" x 9.75", "Hd Qrs Army of Northern Virginia," April 9, 1865. The letter, addressed to "Lieut General Grant Comdg Armies of the US" reads in full: "I have received your letter of this date containing the terms of surrender of the Army of Northern VA as proposed by you, as they are substantially the same as those expressed in your letter of the 8th inst. They are accepted. I will proceed to designate the proper officers to carry the stipulation into effect."

    The two generals had exchanged letters over the course of two days, and Lee's letter accepting Grant's terms would result in the formal signing of surrender documents later that afternoon. The carte de visite and letter are framed to the overall size of 17.5" x 15.75".

    Condition: The carte de visite has moderate toning, mat burn, and soiling/foxing throughout. There is paper loss at the vertical edges. Lee's signature is clear and bold. The fair copy letter has flattened folds.
