    Description

Robert E. Lee: Signed 1869 Washington College Autograph Album. 5.5" x 8" embossed leather-bound album with gold-stamped design on the covers titled: "Autographs". The album apparently belonged to John S. Lewis who signed his name on the front free endpaper and dated it March 1869. The album contains the autographs of both students and faculty at Washington College (later Washington & Lee University), including its most famous president, Robert E. Lee. Since this book was assembled four years after the war, it is unlikely that any of the students served in the Confederate armed forces. The first page is inscribed: "R E Lee Pres: Washington College", "Wm. Preston Johnston Profr History & Eng Literature" and "Edward S. Joynes Professor of Modern Languages". Johnston (1831-1899) was the son of CSA General Albert Sidney Johnston. He served as Aide-de-Camp to Jefferson Davis and was with Davis when he was captured at the end of the war. Lee invited him to join the faculty at Washington College. He later went on to become the President of Louisiana State University and the first President of Tulane University in 1884. Edward Southey Joynes (1834-1917) was a noted scholar and textbook author. He likewise accepted Lee's personal offer to join the faculty. He served in the Confederate War Department during the War Between the States. Others names include John W. Brockenbough (represented the CSA in the Peace Conference of 1861 and served as a Confederate Congressman), William Allan (1837-1889... Confederate Lt. Colonel, Chief of Ordnance, staff member under Stonewall Jackson, served with Jubal Early, military historian in the post-war period) and fourteen other members of the faculty and staff. The signatures of the students appear after a separation of a single, blank leaf. Covers detached, loss to spine, wear to edges, interior pages sound and undamaged.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
