DescriptionRobert E. Lee Pay Roll Signed "R E Lee." Two pages, 20.25" x 16" (sight), Fort Lafayette [New York], May 1842. The roll contains a list of thirty-four names and each individual's occupation; term of service; pay per day; total amount of pay; any deductions, specifying which account and amount; the signature verifying payment as well as witnesses' signatures and remarks. Lee, captain in the Corps of Engineers, signs to certify that "...the services charged in the within Roll were actually performed, and necessary to the construction and repairs of Fort La Fayette and that the wages paid were just and reasonable." Weakening along the folds has resulted in some separation and loss of paper at the upper and lower edges. Adhesive ghosting at upper edge and center. Scattered spots of foxing. Toned.
Matted with a later photograph of Lee and a facsimile copy of the signature (the original can be seen through a window on the verso) and framed to an overall size of 38" x 25".
