Robert E. Lee Military Pass Signed "RE Lee / Genl" and dated May 22, 1862. One page, 7.25" x 3.25", "Hd. Qrts: Richmond." In this pass, General Lee allows a farmer from Richmond to "be allowed to pass all guards, patrols from this City to his farm on Brooke Turnpike & to return at his pleasure." Only days after writing this pass, General Joseph E. Johnston was wounded at the Battle of Seven Pines and Lee took command of the Army of Northern Virginia, a move that the Confederate press disapproved. This document bears heavy soiling, staining, and some separations. Some uneven edges. Affixed to a slightly larger paper.
