Description

    Robert E. Lee Document Signed. One partially-printed page, 8" x 3" (sight), n.p., circa 1839. Working out of the chief engineer's office in Washington, D.C., beginning in 1834, Lieutenant Lee supervised engineering projects along the upper Mississippi River. His exceptional work earned him a promotion to captain in August 1838 and an order to report to Fort Hamilton, New York, in April 1841. This document reads in print, "I certify That the articles [replaced with a handwritten "room"] within charged have [replaced with a handwritten "s"] been received [replaced with a handwritten "occupied"], were [replaced with a handwritten "was"] necessary for, and have [replaced with a handwritten "s"] been or will be applied, for the objects within stated, to the Improvement of the Mississippi, above the Mouth of the Ohio." The document is signed "R E Lee / Capt. Engrs." This document exhibits some tears to the right margin. Neither the text nor the signature is affected. Matted and framed to an overall size of 13" x 17.5". This document has not been examined out of the frame.
