    Description

    Robert E. Lee Document Signed. Partially-printed page, 7.5" x 2" (sight), n.p., circa 1838. This document reads in print, "I Certify, That the articles charged in the within account, have been received, were necessary for, and have been or will be applied, for the objects within stated, to the Improvement of the Harbor of St. Louis." The document is signed "R E Lee / Lt. Engrs." A window has been cut out on the back of the frame so that the verso of the document can be read. Matted and framed with an elegant engraving of Lee to an overall size of 13.5" x 17.25".


    More Information:

    Working out of the chief engineer's office in Washington, D.C., beginning in 1834, Lieutenant Lee supervised engineering projects along the upper Mississippi River. His exceptional work earned him a promotion to captain in August 1838 and an order to report to Fort Hamilton, New York, in April 1841.
