    Description

Robert E. Lee Carte de Visite Signed "R E Lee." Measuring 2.5" x 4.25", Boude & Miley, Lexington [Virginia], circa 1870. This image, captured by photographer Michael Miley, shows an aging, yet dignified Lee in civilian dress shortly before his death. Miley, a young Army of Northern Virginia veteran, took numerous photographs of Lee, his family, Confederate notables, and the nearby Virginia countryside. The most famous image of his career is the well-known portrait of a uniformed Lee astride Traveler. The portrait is faded and the right edge of the photograph shows very slight damage, but the general's signature is bold.
