Description

Richard Wagner Autograph Letter Signed "Rich. Wagner" in German, one page, 5.5' x 8.5". Bayreuth, on the day of the battle of Sedan. To Ernst Wilhelm Fritzsch, publisher of his collected works. In full, "It seems, my dear Herr Fritzsch, that you are waiting until I remind you that I only have the 2 vellum compulsory copies, before you send the ninth volume? Certainly, I must still thank you very much for its punctual production, and in general for the whole edition, which indeed does you honor in every respect; still, I cannot understand why, just at the last volume, I finally appear to have been almost completely forgotten. I hope that - in general - I shall soon hear from you." The Battle of Sedan was fought on September 1, 1870 in the Franco-Prussian War, resulting in the capture of Emperor Napoleon III, the fall of the second French empire, and the eventual creation of the victorious German Empire in 1871. Gesammelte Schriften und Dichtungen, Wagner's Collected Writings, were published by Fritzsch in ten volumes from 1871-1883, under Wagner's direct supervision. This letter was written by the German composer on the anniversary of the Battle of Seden, September 1st, most probably in the late 1870s. Fine condition.
