Richard Nixon: Extensively Annotated Interview Transcript. Twenty-page typewritten transcript of questions and answers presented to Vice President Richard Nixon, likely in 1959, by Earl Mazo. It is titled: "Replies to Mazo Questions, JFC draft." Mazo (d. 2007) was the political correspondent for the New York Herald Tribune and the New York Times. He accompanied Nixon on his tumultuous trip to Venezuela in 1958. In 1959, he published a glowing biography: "Richard Nixon: A Political and Personal Portrait." This document is likely part of the research that Mazo conducted in preparation for that work. After Nixon's defeat at the polls in 1960, Mazo investigated possible voter fraud in Illinois and Texas. He was convinced that Kennedy had stolen the election and, in mid-December, started publishing his findings. There were only four installments, however, as Nixon called his boss and insisted that the series be halted, as the nation could ill afford a constitutional crisis. The transcript is heavily annotated in Nixon's hand. Towards the end of the interview, Nixon declares his admiration for Theodore Roosevelt. He also makes some comments which proved to be ironic: "I do not quit under fire. The more my views are distorted, the more I shall fight to get the truth to the public."
