DescriptionRichard Mentor Johnson Autograph Letter Signed as Vice President "Richard Johnson". One page, 8" x 10", undated, circa 1837, to "A. Vanderpool" [likely Aaron Vanderpoel, then a member of the New York State Assembly]. The letter has the usual fold creases with some minor splits in the creases, two of which have been repaired/reinforced on the verso. Otherwise in very good condition.
Richard Mentor Johnson was the 9th Vice President of the United States, serving under Martin Van Buren from 1837 until 1841. In this letter he writes to his "worthy friend" in part: "I received your favor respecting Col Pratt [Colonel Zadoc Pratt, a Congressman from New York's 8th District]. I find him a worthy & noble fellow...I wish to God you were with us. I shall ever remember your patriotic speeches...Sincerely, Richard Johnson".
