Treasury Warrant issued to a survivor of the Goliad Massacre for his service as a congressman

Republic of Texas Treasury Warrants (2) matted and framed to an overall size of 15" x 18". First, a Treasury Warrant issued to Goliad Massacre survivor William Hunter; 7" x 3.5"; February 5, 1842. Hunter receives a warrant in the amount of $545.00 for his pay and mileage as a member of the Congress, where he represented Goliad. The certificate has not been examined out of the frame, but there is evidence of showthrough from Hunter's endorsement signature on verso. Hunter fought in the Texas Revolution as a member of the New Orleans Greys; and served under James Fannin at Goliad. He was one of the soldiers (along with Fannin) taken out for execution by gunfire by the Mexican army. Hunter feigned death after surviving the initial volleys, but was subsequently bayoneted, clubbed, and stripped of his clothing. He nevertheless managed to escape with his life.

Framed together with a treasury warrant issued to G.S. Thomas in the amount of $92.50 for supplies for the military. The warrant measures 6" x 3.5" and is dated May 1, 1838. With light ink smudges, otherwise fine.

Condition: Both pieces near fine, except as noted. Wooden frame has some wear at corners.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
