    Description

Republic of Texas Public Debt Certificate Issued to Mansell W. Matthews and Republic of Texas Note Endorsed by Matthews on verso. Republic of Texas Debt Certificate number 5093 (9.75" x 8.75", sight) was issued to Matthews on February 8, 1854 in the amount of $120.00 for "A claim for Services as 1st Sergeant in Captain Becknell's Company in 1836 and 1838." Matthews served as a surgeon in the Texas army and was at the Battle of San Jacinto where he attended to Sam Houston's wounds. This certificate covers payment for this period of his service.

The debt certificate is matted and framed alongside a Republic of Texas Treasury note (3.5" x 6.75") made out to Samuel Jones in the amount of $85.85. The note was transferred to Matthews, and his endorsement signature is on the verso (side displayed). A great pairing framed to an overall size of 22" x 20.25".

Condition: Debt certificate is near fine, with a few stray inks stains. Treasury note has chipping, ink stains and dark toning, though Matthews signature is bold and prominent.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
